We were asked to revitalise Trinity's Global Footprint Map to highlight their global reach.

Bringing Trinity’s global impact to life

At Fat Beehive, we thrive on creating digital solutions designed to make a difference. Our collaboration with Trinity College Dublin (TCD) was no exception. Tasked with revitalising Trinity’s Global Footprint Map, we delivered an interactive, data-driven tool that showcases the university’s global reach, partnerships, and impact – all while ensuring a seamless user experience.

Trinity’s original Global Footprint Map was in need of a modern, more dynamic interface – one that would allow students, faculty, and partners to explore Trinity’s international connections with ease. Our mission was to design and build a high-performing map that could integrate smoothly into Trinity’s existing website, whilst adhering to their branding, technical, and accessibility requirements.

A complex brief with a clear goal

From the outset, we knew this project required precision, collaboration, and innovation. Trinity wanted a visually engaging, filterable map that would highlight the following:

  • The number of students studying at Trinity (undergraduate, postgraduate, visiting).
  • The size and location of Trinity’s alumni network.
  • Trinity’s global partnerships, including Erasmus exchange, international joint programmes, and research alliances.
  • The presence of alumni chapters worldwide.

While Trinity’s main website wasn’t part of this scope, our team had to work closely with their IT department to ensure a smooth integration of the new map.

A data-driven and engaging solution

We approached the project by leveraging cutting-edge JavaScript-based data visualisation tools, ensuring:

  • Interactive user experience: users can filter the map dynamically based on different criteria.
  • Seamless integration: the map was developed to embed easily within Trinity’s existing website using HTML and JavaScript.
  • Brand alignment: the design followed Trinity’s brand guidelines, ensuring consistency in colours, typography, and aesthetics.
  • Future-proofing: we provided Trinity’s IT team with a fully customisable solution, allowing them to update data as needed.

Challenges and triumphs

Like any great project, this one came with its fair share of challenges, but our experienced team tackled them head-on:

  • Tight timeline: The new map was scheduled to be showcased at a major Trinity event . Our team pulled out all the stops to deliver ahead of schedule.
  • Technical integration: With Trinity’s IT team handling hosting, we ensured the map’s HTML and JavaScript framework was built for easy deployment.
  • Training and Handover: Since this project wasn’t built within a CMS, we provided clear documentation and training to Trinity’s team to ensure future updates could be managed in-house.

By the time the project had been completed we’d delivered a sleek, powerful map that brings Trinity’s global footprint to life in an engaging, innovative way.
