Delightful Ethical Digital

The Hive’s been buzzing since 1997

We’ve been around since 1997, always specialising in working with organisations dedicated to social purpose, particularly charities. Read more about our history and enjoy some of our early sites.

In the beginning…

When Tom Moreton founded Fat Beehive his aim was simple: to provide well-designed, accessible and easy-to-use websites for organisations doing social good. Our first client, Cafédirect, was at the forefront of the fair trade movement, supporting small-scale coffee growers and ensuring a fair wage for local communities.

We’ve stayed true to his original vision and have now worked with countless organisations dedicated to improving people’s lives, from household names to niche charities doing great work. Here are a handful of the many clients we’ve helped.

Early days

When we launched we began by building our own bespoke Content Management System (Beekeeper), as a suitable CMS for the not-for-profit sector didn’t exist. However, times have changed and we now specialise in building WordPress and Drupal charity websites. Open-source has become a cornerstone of our development philosophy, and we’re proud members of the worldwide development community for these CMSs.

Although the technology has changed, our commitment to social good has never wavered.

Evolution of the agency

The last few years have seen really exciting changes at Fat Beehive. We’ve refined our services, and expanded the team. We still “do web stuff”, but these days are more committed than ever to supporting clients once their website goes live. We continue to go from strength to strength, with some incredible sites and brands going live, including ours – a process that has given us even more empathy for what our clients face. Charity web design has never been so much fun!

Recent highlights include being placed in the top 20 BCorps in the world, and the 9th in the UK. We’re currently the only digital agency in the top 10, which confirms our commitment to the community and environment. In addition we launched Black in Tech, in an effort to increase diversity in tech sphere, and we’re thrilled that it’s had a positive impact.
